What is a Notary Public?
A Notary is a person of proven integrity appointed by the state to serve the public as an official, impartial witness (can have no financial or beneficial interest in the transaction). A Notary has the power to witness the signing of documents and to administer oaths. A Notary ensures a signer’s identity and willingness to sign documents.
What to Bring to Identify a Document Signer:
Personal Identification that has your picture and signature:
• State-issued Driver’s License.
• State-issued identification card.
• U.S. Passport issued by the U.S. Department of State
• U.S. Military ID.
• State, county and local government IDs.
• Permanent resident card, or “green card,” issued by the U.S. Citizenship and
Personal Knowledge: The Notary Public has had sufficient interaction with the individual over a period of time. That means it’s someone we know (family friend, co-worker etc.)
Credible Witness: The Notary Public knows the person serving as a credible identifying witness and they in turn know and can verify the identity of a document signer. (This is only when the document signer does not have personal identification).
Fees for Services:
For taking an acknowledgment, for the first signature of each signer $5.00
For each additional signature of each signer $2.50
For administering an oath or affirmation $2.50
For a certified copy $2.50
For a jurat, for each signature on the affidavit $5.00
Travel Fees will be either $10 or $25/hour plus notarization.
Please be advised that a Notary Public may refuse to perform a notarization if he or she cannot be certain of a prospective signer’s identity, willingness, or understanding of what is happening at that moment. In addition, a notary may not notarize a document in which he or she has a financial interest.
